What, if any, archaeological investigations have been conducted to find a Viking settlement or something akin to a longphort? With all those textual references, this seems to me to be a project worth pursuing in order to settle the question (and likely raise plenty of new ones). - Kerry
To date there have been no archeological digs on Noirmoutier to look for anything Viking related. There have been excavations under the castle that have revealed Merovingian and Carolingian artefacts, but nothing Norse. I agree that this would be something to look into. However, one of the key issues is we don’t know where their settlement would have been. I proposed to l’association des amis de Noirmoutier that we should point the archeological telescope managed by the university of Tenessse at the island, but it costs $500k per hour….
